Bonhams: Post-War & Contemporary Art

Words by Alessandra Conti

London, Bonhams

On July 1st 2015, at the Bonhams London Headquarters in New Bond Street, a selected Post-War & Contemporary Art sale will take place.

This tightly curated selection of works include the Italian artists Lucio Fontana, Alberto Burri and Arnaldo Pomodoro, the American Andy Warhol, the German Gerhard Richter, the London born Howard Hodgkin, the graffiti artist Banksy and a rare artwork by Japanese artist Shozo Shimamoto, founder of the avant-garde Gutai group; just to name a few.

How to forget the astonishing, breathtaking, enormous installation by Anish Kapoor in the Turbin Hall at the Tate Modern in 2002? Ten years later he releases a series of stainless steel and lacquer sculptures, of which a pink version is going to be at Bonhams in this upcoming sale. Its obviously pointless to compare the two pieces but the visual impact and the emotional power is still evident even in this more “human size” stunning work.

Its interesting to see how, in totally different parts of the world and in times in which communication and exchange of ideas were definitely harder, big art revolutions were born. In this upcoming sale at Bonhams, lies the post-war art world, with works by artists who are essential in any contemporary art collection.
